Example: The sky is full of black clouds.
- before a noun which has already benn mentioned;
Example: Jack has just bought a new book. It's the book he had been looking for in all bookstores he could think of.
- before superlatives;
Example: Janet is the best secretary our company has ever had.
- before certain proper name of the seas, rivers, deserts, etc;
Example: The Sahara is one the places I'd like to visit.
