"A" is used in front of singular and countable nouns that begin:
- with a consonant sound;
Example: Jane and Peter live in a house.
- with "U" when it has a /yu/ sound;
Example: Yara is a university student.
"AN" is used in front of singular countable nouns and words that begin:
- with the vowels "A,E,I and O";
Example: I work in an office.
- with "U" when it has a vowel sound;
Example: Susan doesn't have an uncle.
- with a mute "H";
Example: The dentist will see you in an hour.
