SOME HOLIDAYS & CELEBRATIONS IN THE USA

Hello guys!! How have you been?? I hope you guys enjoy it, share it and practice the vocabulary about HOLIDAYS & CELEBRATIONS in the United States of America.

January 1st- New Year’s Day: Celebrates beginning of the Gregorian calendar year. Festivities include counting down to 12:00 midnight on the preceding night, New Year’s Eve, often with fireworks and party.


Third Monday in January – Birthday of Martin LUTHER King Jr. : Honors Dr. Martin L. King Jr., Civil Rights leader, who was actually born on January 15th, 1929;


Third Monday in February – President’s Day: Washington’s birthday was first declared a federal holiday by an 1879 act of Congress.



Last Monday in May – Memorial Day: Honors the nation’s war dead from the Civil War onwards; marks the unofficial beginning of the summer season.



July 4th – Independence Day: Celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence  from British rule, also called the Fourth of July. Fireworks celebration are held in many cities throughout the nation.


First Monday in September – Labor Day: Celebrates the achievements of workers and the labor movement; marks the unofficial end of the summer season.


Second Monday in October – Columbus Day: Honors Christopher Columbus, traditional discoverer of the Americas.


October 31st – Halloween: Typical festive Halloween activities include trick or treating, attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins into jack o’ lanterns, lighting bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories and watching horror movies. 


November 11th – Veterans Day: Honors all veterans of the United States armed forces. It is observed on November 11th to recall the end of World War l on that date in 1918(major hostilities of the World War l were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect).



Fourth Thursday in November – Thanksgiving Day: Traditionally cleebrates the giving of thanks for the autumn harvest. Traditionally includes the sharing of a turkey dinner.



December 25th- Christmas: The most widely celebrated holiday of the Christian year, Christmas is observed as a commemoration of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.
